The steel oxidises with pollutants in the air forming a thick layer of rust – this formation acts as a protective layer which prevents the steel from corroding. The layer constantly regenerates and forms over time.

A steel which is ideal for use in elevated working temperatures, S55C carbon steel is used in the fabrication of industrial pressure vessels and boilers. It is an JIS G4501 S55C specified grade which governs steels used in pressurised service.
