Mechanical properties of 309S stainless steel

309S stainless steel is a free-cutting stainless steel containing sulfur, mainly used for welding applications. It is a variant of the lower-carbon 309 stainless steel with excellent heat and corrosion resistance. The corresponding Chinese brand is 0Cr23Ni13, and the American standard is S30908 (American AISI, ASTM).

309S stainless steel features

Excellent heat resistance: 309S stainless steel has good high temperature resistance and can be used for a long time at temperatures up to 1000 ° C, suitable for industrial equipment and stoves in high temperature environments.

Good corrosion resistance: In the common acid, alkali, salt and other corrosive media has good corrosion resistance, especially for sulfuric acid, nitric acid and other strong acids have good corrosion resistance.

Oxidation resistance: Containing high chromium and nickel elements, it can form a dense chromium oxide layer, effectively prevent the metal surface from being oxidized, and extend the service life.

Good machinability: It has good plasticity and weldability, and can be formed and processed by cold working, hot working and other ways.

The chemical composition of 309S stainless steel includes carbon (C≤0.08), manganese (Mn≤2.00), silicon (Si≤1.00), phosphorus (P≤0.045), sulfur (S≤0.030), nickel (Ni≤12.0-15.0) and chromium (Cr≤22.0-24.0) and other elements.

The mechanical properties of 309S stainless steel are as follows:

Yield strength: ≥ 205 MPa

Tensile strength: ≥ 515 MPa (or ≥ 520 MPa, depending on specific standards or test results may vary)

Elongation: ≥ 40%

Section shrinkage: ≥ 50%

309S stainless steel is widely used in the following fields:

Furnace materials: such as boilers, energy (nuclear power, thermal power, fuel cells), industrial furnaces, incinerators, heating furnaces, etc.

Chemical and petrochemical fields: used in the manufacture of reactors, heat exchangers, towers, pipelines and other corrosion and high temperature resistant equipment.
