The steel oxidises with pollutants in the air forming a thick layer of rust – this formation acts as a protective layer which prevents the steel from corroding. The layer constantly regenerates and forms over time.

A283 Grade B steel plates furnished shall conform to the requirements of the current of specification a6/a6m. In the process, A283 Grade B shall be made by one or more of following processes: open hearth, basic oxygen or electric furnace.
