Can A516 Gr70 steel be replaced by Q345R steel?

Recently, some customers asked if the A516 Gr70 steel can be replaced by the Q345R steel? We compare these two products as follows, hoping to help more people who have the same questions.

·Manufacturing Standards
A516 Gr70 steel made according to ASTM, Q345R steel is the national standard steel plate for pressure vessels, and its executive standard is GB/T713.

·Manufacturing method
A516 Gr70 steel is killed steel, and the smelting process adopts open-hearth furnace method, basic oxygen-blowing converter or electric furnace method.
Q345R steel is smelted by oxygen converter or electric furnace and refined outside the furnace.

·Heat treatment method
① The heat treatment can be hot rolling for A516 Gr70 steel plate with thickness ≤40mm, controlled rolling or normalizing; for A516 Gr70 steel plate with thickness >40mm, the heat treatment must be normalized; for A516 Gr70 steel plate with thickness ≤40mm requires impact test, the steel plate needs to be normalized. Normalizing treatment is not required unless required by the customer.
② Q345R steel has a variety of heat treatment methods, including hot rolling, controlled rolling, normalizing rolling or normalizing, generally as the thickness of the steel plate increases. Under the condition of ensuring the performance, the general thickness > 60mm steel plate needs to be normalized.

·Chemical composition and mechanical properties:
This aspect does not make a detailed list. Through comparison, it is found that the main elements in the chemical composition and the mechanical properties of A516 Gr70 steel and Q345R steel are similar, but the strength of A516 Gr70 steel is lower than Q345R steel.
